1. Introduction

Thank you for your interest in the role of Families and Young Adults Worker. We believe it is an exciting time to join the Garland Street Baptist Church staff team as we realise our strategic vision.
In 1800, Baptists in Bury St. Edmunds established Ebenezer Chapel. In 1834, the fellowship moved into a new building in Garland Street. For the past 221 years, church members have had a significant ministry in the town, across the country and around the world.
Today, we continue to be committed to our mission to follow Jesus and make Him known across Bury St. Edmunds and beyond. Our vision is to become a multigenerational church that serves the people we meet in ways that reflect the love of Jesus.
Please visit our website (www.garlandstreet.org.uk) for further information about the church and our activities.

2. Our Mission, Vision, and Values
Mission
Our mission is to follow Jesus and make Him known in our local community, across Bury St. Edmunds and beyond.

Vision
  • To invest time in helping people grow in their walk with the Lord and equip them to be fruitful disciples of Jesus.
  • To always be individually and collectively passionate about sharing the good news and love of Jesus.
  • To be a multigenerational church.
  • To grow in membership and to continue to grow spiritually as individuals and as a church.

Values
  • We are grounded in the Word of God. (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Everything we are is based on what we learn from the Bible.
  • We are inspired and empowered by the Holy Spirit. (Philippians 4:13) We seek the guidance and strength of the Holy Spirit in all we do.
  • We are dependent on prayer. (Psalm 25:4-5) All our works are steeped in prayer.
  • We are committed to our neighbours—people with whom God brings us into contact in our day-to-day lives. (Matthew 22:34-40) We want to be known for our service to those across our town and beyond.
  • We are generous in caring for others. (Galatians 6:10) We value, love and serve those in the church and warmly welcome new people.
  • We are culturally accessible. (James 2:1-5) Non-Christians coming to Garland Street Baptist Church feel included and embraced.

Our Church Ethos
The ethos of Garland Street Baptist Church is the spirit and culture which drives and becomes our motivation for all our service and work; it is the reason why we do what we do. It is to work together to extend Jesus’ model of the Kingdom of God on earth by living out a lifestyle of love, truth, justice, mercy and forgiveness, according to his teaching.

We are inspired by his message, life and example through which God’s unconditional love for all people is expressed and revealed. All our relationships, with each other and those whom we seek to serve are a demonstration of our ethos as they are rooted in our faith in Jesus Christ and in his love. As we serve and work together, it is this faith which directs and influences both our internal relationships as well as our work with those whom Garland Street Baptist Church is seeking to serve.

In this way Garland Street Baptist Church operates on the understanding that our activities are simply an outworking of our faith; that our ‘doing’ derives directly from our ‘being’. There is an essential and binding link between the inner and the outer, the private life and the public face of those who worship at Garland Street Baptist Church. The link between who we are and what we do cannot be broken.
